For Contact 2008, Fountain is holding a fringe Contact exhibition with its resident photographer Fabrice Arfi along with the Canadian Opera Company's violinist; Sandy Baron. Fabrice is a Franco-British photographer whose work spans 15 years and three continents and which documents various encounters with culture art and architecture.

Fabrice's work has been exhibited and sold in the UK and the US and he was one of the featured artists in Portugal for Visei European City of Culture 2002.

More recently Arfi's work has been featured at Praxis and Scratch Gallery in Toronto and he is also an active member of Gallery 44, at 401 Richmond.  Fabrice's architectural photography seems somewhat  haunted by a certain atmospheric sense reminiscent of 1930's and 40's cinema. His latest and more exclusive work is printed on batches of vintage photographic paper which gives each print a distinctive and unique quality where the image seems somehow imbedded into the paper.

Yesteryears, yesteryears... I’ll tell ye about yesteryears. But it’ll fill yer face with tears and put fears in yer ears. I should know, been here for years. It’s the loneliest place y’ever seen, like nowheres y’ever been. It wasn’t proper and it sure wasn’t clean. Yesteryears was fugged up and mean. Yesteryears, yesteryears, yesteryears – it’s all so clear. S o grab yer guns and head for the hills. Come join me in the North. But be prepared for what yer gonna find: forests filled with wildlifes, ghosts buried in the snows, lonely souls everywheres. I had my home attempt-exploded! I seen my foremothers died! The Yesteryears album is a prologue to an ongoing project and features portraits of characters from a folktale about forefathers and foremothers; pioneers from history; and folkloric events. These faces are from different parts and elsewhere places. They are graphite drawings enhanced by computer technology. In conclusion, they represent the past times and the futures.

Jay Dart is a drawerist from Toronto. For years he drawed fictional hockey players, floor plans for imaginary mansions and estates, and planets that probably don’t exist. After graduating from the visual arts program at the University of Guelph, the Dart freelance illustrated and graphic designed for the agriculture and entertainment sectors. He has also been involved with the producing of the RESFEST Digital Film Festival and the programming of short films for the Toronto International Film Festival. Yesteryears is Dart’s first solo exhibition of drawing work.

"Cinematheque Ontario's primary projectionist, Kathryn MacKay is also an accomplished painter, and her two professions go hand in hand. MacKay occassionally has additional duties as a programmer for the Cinematheque's experimental Free Screening Series, and there's a similar sensibility-fondness for the kinds of innovations made by American filmmaker Stan Brakhage, for example- in her meticulously created works. MacKay fashions collages, frequently on plywood, building up and scraping down layers of paint and glaze, and interspersing them with images and texts (everything from ticket stubs to maps to vintage magazine clippings). The process is simultaniously archaelogical and architectural; MacKay lays out the sites of disovery herself, slowly excavating or developing them as she sees fit." - David Balzer in Toronto Life, April 2008

March Update...

In spite of the seemingly endless winter, March has been a great month for Fountain. Our showing of pointilism artist Paul Murray's work was a great success with the opening attracting many local Toronto characters including actress-playwright Kate Lynch, recording artist Spookey Ruben, painter Cynthia Chapman and man-about-town Marcus O'Hara (see below for images).
